Having sold his first case of wine in Smithfields Market at the tender age of 26 Robert is still our neighbour thirty years on. We caught him peering over the fence a few times when we opened last year, and when we finally made friends we have fallen for his Francocentric and classic taste in wines. Robert keeps it in the family; still working with the same winemakers that he started out with just a stones throw away and has chosen some highlights to whet your whistle with this month.
DOMAINE BUISSON-BATTAULT, BOURGOGNE ALIGOTE 2011 Burgundy, France
Ageing in large oak barrels which formerly housed Meursault adds a style and unusual breadth of flavour to a wine from Burgundy’s second white grape, the Aligote. Gentle battonnage, or stirring of the lees, also adds an engaging yeasty quality to the fruit. Made from one of Meursault’s more gifted young practitioners, Francois Buisson.30.00
ST ANDRE DE FIGUIERE, PREMIERE DE FIGUIERE 2013 Cotes de Provence, France This is an organically produced blend of Vermentino (70%) and Semillon grown on decomposed schist soil in vineyards overlooking the Med halfway between Toulon and St Tropez. The influence of the ferrous schist is key and adds a structure and teasing mineral length to the mid-palate fruit, a counterpoint to the floral notes of acacia and fennel on the nose.7.00
CHATEAU LANGLET, GRAVES 2011 Bordeaux, France This comes from a tiny 2 hectare plot of vines, surrounded entirely by pine forests, a short drive from Pessac-Leognan. The scent of warm sap rising in the afternoon air undoubtedly contributes to the distinctive smoky and gently fruited aromas. Merlot is used which adds flesh and ripe, sanguine juiciness to this characterful young claret from Bordeaux’s most southern reaches.34.00
DOMAINE CANET VALETTE, ‘UNE ET MILLE NUITS’ ST CHINIAN 2010 Languedoc-Roussillon, France An inspirational wine from the Languedoc, this deeply coloured blend of five varietals including Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, has more than a hint of the mystic east revealing aromas of oriental spices and musk, infused with more local wild herbs. The palate is an elixir of brooding, super-ripe blackberry, lifted with a delicate minerality from the limestone-clay soil. Harmonious and with silky tannins it provides a perfect foil for red meat and game.6.50 38.00
